To Fix or not to Fix

Posted by CONSULTAPRO on 10/25/11

Computer Repair has changed. The cost of PC hardware has "drastically" changed , and is very inexpensive. Years ago we used to spend thousands of dollars on a PC setup, today you can get a more powerful system for only hundreds.

So the question comes into play ... is my computer worth fixing? We'll there are a couple of things you should realize first.

1. An honest repair company will always make this comparison. Dishonest ones will try to revive a dinosaur if they could, so always be on the lookout for the cheats.

2. I usally say that if a repair is at least half of what you have spent, it's probably better to go new .. depending on how old your system is, also plays a part in this decision. If it is within two years that you made your purchase, I would say stick it out for another year or so.

3. Keep in mind that if you need a repair because of Hard Drive issues, that you STILL have the labor of reinstalling the OS and backing up or recovering the old data .. You'll have labor with a new PC as well .. the transferring of files, setting up on network, etc so way the costs carefully.

4. Sentimental Value ... yes .. some people are jsut in love with their computer and it's hard to part with it .. but the new ones are sexier, sleeker and faster ... and we can move you photos, documents, etc over, so it will be new but will have the familiarality of your old buddy.

5. Most of all realize that the old PC no matter how well it runs, will be older .. may be slow, outdated as far as the Operating System (OS) and not have any warranty or support options left because of age. At this point it would be wise to take a deep breath and move forward.

Hope this helps ... remember Consult A Pro, Inc is ALWAYS here to help you make your technological decisons.
