Will tablets replace laptops?

Posted by CONSULTAPRO on 06/15/11

Tablets seem to be everywhere. First it was the apple ipad .. then Samsung .. then Motorola, now Blackberry. Not to mention all the other brands coming out such as Acer, Archos, EPads, Dell, etc ..

While I personally think of a Tablet running either Android or another non-windows based OS, as a oversized phones ... whether it has dialing capabilities or not.

Also, we have to remember that tablets are not new. They have been around for years. But not like these. Usually they were clunky and not made for finger press and super expensive. They would use an OS designed specifically for a mouse such as Windows so the touch screen didn’t really add much ease of use for most people. But since the first Apple iPhone and the HTC G1 (the first Android phone), the Touch Revolution has exploded! Touch screens makes things a lot easier rather than just using a directional pad or a scroll wheel or trackpad to get around on devices.

I think the tablet WILL overcome sales of laptops initially, but many will still have to rely on a laptop or desktop to be able to be really productive.. these tablets are limited by the way of the software (called Apps) on them. They don't run your standard applications such as word, excel, outlook, etc. Many don't even support Flash and even Java .. there is no CD/DVD to just load software on as we are so familiar with.

I thought at first ... how are we going to print? ... but suprisingly enough Google's "Cloud Printing" works just fine.

Tablets are great for a quick webpage glance or a superquick e-mail message ... but why can't we just use our phones? .. I was thrilled when the first PDA came out .. because it replaced my multiple devices such as contact lists ... phonebook, paper and pad, etc ... then the "smart phone" eliminated the PDA? Who uses a PDA today?

We go through these transitions until something better comes our way. There is definite place for a tablet in the market .. but will it replace a notebook?

Are you considering buying a tablet or do you already have one? Why or why not?
